Cursed Isle is a scenario in The Rise of Wesnoth campaign. Depending on in-game decisions, it can be the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, or seventeenth scenario in the campaign, alongside The Dragon, Lizard Beach, and Troll Hole.

Background

After orcs invaded the Green Isle,[1] its human populace was forced to flee east to the Great Continent, led by Prince Haldric.[2] Upon arriving at the Great Continent, the refugees were met by Lady Dionli, who brought them before the Ka'lian, situated in the Grey Woods.[3] The council eventually agreed to allow the humans to settle in the plains surrounding the Great River and the hills to the south of the Great River, on the condition that Haldric complete four quests.[4]

Lord El'Isomithir decreed that Haldric be made to travel to the Isle of Tears, which had fallen under a curse, and put its souls to rest.[4] The voyage by sea was short, and Haldric organized for the ship to drop him off, then return to pick up the fighters later.[5]

Scenario

Victory:
  • Defeat all enemy leaders[c]
  • Defeat the Vampire Queen[d]
Defeat:
  • Death of Prince Haldric
  • Death of Lady Jessene
  • Turns run out
Gold carryover:
  • Early finish bonus.
  • 40% of gold carried over to the next scenario.

After making landfall, Haldric cautioned them to be careful for more undead, while Lady Jessene speculated that they would be different to the undead they had faced previously, due to having been elves previously. They were attacked by various undead forces upon their arrival, sent by Isorfilad and Tinoldor, a pair of spectres.[5]

During the battle, one of Haldric's men came across one of the three temples in the centre of the island, wherein they found the Midnight Queen, who attempted to ensorcel Haldric. Jessene helped him to regain his senses, and they defeated the Midnight Queen, although not before she planted a curse upon Haldric. With her demise, the remaining undead faded away.[5]

Haldric's forces fought their way across the island and killed the two spectres, each planting a curse upon Haldric before they died.[5]
