Background
The Lich-Lords, formerly the leaders of the Wesfolk, had opened gateways to allow armies of orcs to invade the Green Isle.[1] Due to the number of orcs, Stormvale was unable to hold out, being forced to evacuate its populace. Its king, Eldaric IV, died in battle to buy the evacuees time as they journeyed through the south pass, led by Prince Haldric.[2]

While traveling through the south pass, a group of orcs flanked the Stormvale refugees from the east. As Haldric pressed forward, he discovered Burin, a dwarvish steelclad, inside a nearby mountain hut. Burin decided to join them on the road ahead, excited by the prospect of fighting orcs. After getting past the orcish guards, Snagakhan and Knafakhan,[b] the refugees' fighters met the orcs in battle, despite a handful of reinforcements arriving as the first of the two orcish warlords fell. Haldric slew both Tan-Schmog and Tan-NauVong before arriving at a crossroads.[3]

Notes
