The fourth beta for 1.10 is ready. Feel free to celebrate the new release with us in [http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?t=35687 this forum thread].

We offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read [http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/wesnoth/tags/1.9.13/players_changelog players changelog] that only includes changes every player will probably notice (and often feels empty because devs tend to forget to add their stuff there) and the (rather) [http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/wesnoth/tags/1.9.13/changelog complete changelog] with (almost) all the details, which might make your head spin due to the technical terms used every now and then...

Almost two years have gone by since we released Wesnoth 1.8. To thank you for more than 5 million downloads via sourceforge.net, we now proudly present '''Wesnoth 1.10'''. You can look at the (translated) [http://www.wesnoth.org/start/1.10/ release notes] to get an idea about what has changed since 1.8. For those who just want to play, the new release is available for [http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/Download#Stable_.281.10_branch.29 download]. This stable release is compatible with the last two releases from the 1.9.x series. If you have any comments, we would be happy to hear them in the [http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?t=35975 forum thread] dedicated to this release. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find some, please [http://wiki.wesnoth.org/ReportingBugs report] it to help us fix them in following releases.

At the moment the Windows, Mac OS X and OpenPandora packages are ready. You can find them at the [http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Download#Development_.281.9_branch.29 download page]. Once the others are done you can find them at the [http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Download#Development_.281.9_branch.29 download page], too. If you find a bug, please [http://wiki.wesnoth.org/ReportingBugs report] it to help us fix them in following releases.

We are also looking for help in several areas, so that many other releases of similar caliber can follow this one. We are especially looking for translators, graphic artists (sprite, portraits, terrain, story images), music composers (a background in classical composition, and good equipment required), sound artists (for special effects), authors (writing/maintaining campaigns, creating content like unit descriptions, improving the in-game help) and, of course, coders. If you want to participate in developing Wesnoth, just have a look at the [http://forums.wesnoth.org forum] or visit us in the IRC channel [irc://irc.freenode.net/#wesnoth-dev #wesnoth-dev] on irc.freenode.net.

===FOSDEM2012 - Open Source Game Development: Call for Speakers===

''Saturday, November 19 2011''

FOSDEM2012 will host a devroom centered on the development of Free and Open Source Games. Possible speakers (and topic suggestions) are invited to make their proposals. The game development devroom takes place on Sunday, February 5th, 09:00 - 17:00 in room AW1.120 (74 seats). Please have a look at [http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?t=35489 this forum thread] to read the call for speakers.

===Open Source Games at FOSDEM 2012===

''Friday, November 11 2011''

Finally some news not directly related to a new release. Several contributors to Wesnoth have been meeting at FOSDEM for the last 4 years where we took the opportunity to discuss things in person as well as meeting each other. We [http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Fosdem2011#FOSDEM_2012 talked about] eventually trying to get a whole devroom where things can be presented and discussed. During the GSoC Mentor summit at the end of October one topic discussed with other organizations was the creation of such a devroom. Some hours ago the accepted devrooms were announced and the result is:

There will be an "Open Source Game Development" related devroom at [http://fosdem.org/2012/ FOSDEM 2012].

Of course things won't stop there. Since several organizations (including [http://www.wesnoth.org Battle for Wesnoth], [http://www.hedgewars.org Hedgewars], [http://www.unknown-horizons.org Unknown Horizons], [http://www.scummvm.org ScummVM] and [http://www.worldforge.org WorldForge]) agreed on collaborating in this room, further things will be discussed on neutral grounds. There is a [https://lists.fosdem.org/listinfo/open-source-gamedev-devroom mailing list] provided by the FOSDEM folks where we can discuss things. There will also be a "call for speakers" soon. Possible topics can include anything related to open source gaming, meaning it could be about porting to specific platforms, artworks (graphics and sound), translations, working on AI, encouraging UMC contributions or whatever you can think about in regards to open source gaming. The only limit I personally see is that the speaker should have some background in an open source gaming related project e.g. by being a contributor in the area they want to talk about.

Now to the basic facts about the dev room:

* Date: Sunday, February 5th, 09:00 - 17:00

* Place: FOSDEM2012 in Brussels, Room AW1.120 with 74 seats

* Topic: Anything "Open Source Game Development" related possible!

===Wesnoth joins the "Free Game Alliance"===

''Wednesday, October 19 2011''

Last month we were approached by Luca Pancallo from the [http://www.freegamealliance.com/ Free Game Alliance], asking if we would like to join a new initiative to sustain open source and open game development and we agreed. We are proud to be one of the founding members! Basically the alliance is an eclectic group of open source games that covers a wide array of major genres in gaming. The alliance is intended to promote their members visibility on the internet. The other games that are currently part of the alliance include:

* [http://megaglest.org/ MegaGlest]: A fantasy realtime strategy

* [http://www.planeshift.it/ PlaneShift]: A 3D MMORPG

* [http://www.rigsofrods.com Rigs of Rods]: A vehicle simulation program

Wesnoth 1.10

Sunday, January 29 2010

Almost two years have gone by since we released Wesnoth 1.8. To thank you for more than 5 million downloads via sourceforge.net, we now proudly present Wesnoth 1.10. You can look at the (translated) release notes to get an idea about what has changed since 1.8. For those who just want to play, the new release is available for download. This stable release is compatible with the last two releases from the 1.9.x series. If you have any comments, we would be happy to hear them in the forum thread dedicated to this release. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find some, please report it to help us fix them in following releases.

If you want to participate in developing Wesnoth, just have a look at the forum or visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev on irc.freenode.net.

Wesnoth 1.10-rc1 (aka 1.9.14): Development Release, and Upcoming Forum/MP Server Cleanup

Monday, January 9 2012

Finally the first release candidate for 1.10 is ready. We are confident that we are really close to the start of the stable 1.10 series now. For more some details about this release candidate and celebrating the new it please visit this forum thread.

Forum users and players with registered accounts for the primary MP server must read the separate announcement explaining the upcoming changes and unused accounts purge.

We offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice (and often feels empty because devs tend to forget to add their stuff there) and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which might make your head spin due to the technical terms used every now and then...

At the moment the Windows, Mac OS X and OpenPandora packages are ready. You can find them at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. If you find a bug, please report it to help us fix them in following releases.
