Wesnoth 1.7.5: Development Release
Friday, September 4 2009
A new Development release is ready. This is the sixth release in the 1.7.x tree. The reason for this release are some problems with the drakes that were introduced in 1.7.4. This was not the only thing changed, so some more stuff is listed in this forum thread.
As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache...
At the moment the Windows package and the MacOSX packages are ready. You can find them at the download page. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page, too. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite many bugs. If you find one, report it.

Planned website downtime
Monday, August 10 2009
On August 11th, starting around 12:00 PM UTC we'll be taking most of the website down for about 3 hours for maintenance work. This means that the forums and wiki will be completely unavailable until we are finished. Additionally, user authentication services won't be available on the multiplayer servers for all versions until the forums are back online. Any users who join the servers within that timespan will be displayed as unauthenticated.
The add-ons servers for every Wesnoth versions should not be affected by the downtime.
UPDATE: the maintenance was sucessfully completed in less than two hours, and both the wiki and the forums are back online. If you notice any problems, please report them in the forum thread.

Wesnoth 1.6.4: Maintenance Release

Wesnoth 1.6.4 has been released. This is a bugfix release for the stable 1.6 branch. The most important bug fixed this time is a regression that found it's way into 1.6.3. Feel free to celebrate the new release with us in this forum thread.

Wesnoth Summer Art Scholarship
Wednesday, July 1 2009
In response to the generosity of our community, wesnoth has set aside donated funds to create an art scholarship. Our intent is patterned after "Summer of Code"; it allows a student to spend their summer in an internship, creating art for wesnoth, rather than a typical summer job which has little to do with their academic interests. Not only is this an aid to ourselves and the participating students, but we hope that it will serve as an inspirational example to the FLOSS gaming community at large.
We solicited applications from our community, and are now happy to announce the two winning candidates for our Scholarship. The winning proposals were submitted by Kathrin "kitty" Polikeit, and Phil "thespaceinvader" Barber. We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who submitted proposals.
To read more, visit this page in our wiki, or this thread in our forum.

Wesnoth 1.6
Sunday, March 22 2009
More than one year has gone by since we released Wesnoth 1.4. To thank you for more than 3,000,000 downloads via sourceforge.net, we now proudly present Wesnoth 1.6. You can look at the (translated) release notes to get an idea about what has changed since 1.4. For those who just want to play, the new release is available for download. This stable release is compatible with the last two release candidates for 1.6. If you have any comments, we would be happy to hear them in the forum thread dedicated to this release. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find any, report them.
We are also looking for help in several areas, so that many other releases of similar caliber can follow this one. We are especially looking for translators, graphic artists (sprite, portraits, terrain, story images), music composers (a background in classical composition, and good equipment required), sound artists (for special effects), authors (writing/maintaining campaigns, creating content like unit descriptions, improving the ingame help) and, of course, coders. If you want to participate in developing Wesnoth, just have a look at the forum or visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev on irc.freenode.net.

Google Summer of Code 2009
Sunday, February 15 2009
We will try to get into Google Summer of Code just like last year. If you don't know what Summer of Code is, have a look at the official Summer of Code FAQ. It is an option for a student to work with an open source project as summer job. Last year projects for Battle for Wesnoth were for example rewriting the editor (now it is completely rewritten and can be started right from the game) and adding extended AI controls in WML (the so called "Formula AI"). We will post an update if we are accepted into the program.
