"Temple of Ice" is a scenario from The Altaz Mariners, being one of the campaign's visitable island. Its location within the world map is originally hidden and has to be discovered through one of the several possible methods, including visiting Morteau twice.

Storyline

Act 2

Largo and Hugo visit the island to find out about the storm barrier blocking their journey to the south. After receiving the confirmation that the storm is conjured by the Brotherhood of Ice and that the only way to pass it is by using a mana orb, the brothers acquire one from the temple.

Act 3

Largo, Hugo, and Marco are teleported to the island from Avalon for their mission to force the Brotherhood to lower the storm barrier. Marco suggests that they abandon the elves now that they are safe back north, but claims it is just a loyalty test after Largo and Hugo voice their disgust at the idea of betraying the elves who saved their lives.

However, upon entering the temple, the brothers are surrounded by elite royals led by Sir Eldrid, who come to arrest them as the royals know that the people who have seen south of the storm cannot be trusted. With no way to escape, Largo, Hugo, and Marco find themselves captured and taken away.

Gameplay

The island consists of two maps both titled "Temple of Ice". The first map played when entering from the world map is the map of the island, while the second is the inside of the temple. To enter the inside, the player must step on the stairwell in the center (which can be inaccessible depending on the player's current gameplay state).

Act 2

Island map

Largo, Hugo, and all followers start in the southeast harbor of the island. The stairwell to access the temple is initially blocked by a petrified Revenant. To get the Revenant out of the way, pick up some conspicuous-looking snow from north and east of the temple, then use it (via the inventory) on the stones that haven't been snowed in.

Besides being a way to enter the temple map, the island map has an NPC named Bittertooth in the northwest shore of the island that requires the player to have siren's blood in the inventory. Completing the quest is beneficial for future scenario "Solant".

Temple map

In the temple, the main goal is to obtain an orb for crossing the storm barrier. To do so, the player can either buy one from Shadow Fang for 100 gold or steal one from a locked room.

While in the temple, the player's reputation score is tracked and it can be checked by talking to Coldfist near the entrance. A negative score prevents the player from accessing some quests. The player should be careful with choosing dialogue options as they may lower their reputation.

The temple consists of:

  • The entrance room for talking with Coldfist, where the player can donate 10 gold for 1 reputation score.
  • Icewind's room, located north of the entrance room. The room has a couple of bookshelves to check. Returning Icewind's scroll (found in one of the bookshelves, not necessarily in this room) earn the player 3 reputation score and access to additional dialogue options with Icewind. The significant dialogue options are asking about Icewind's studies and then about Xavier (to access the lich figurehead) and telling him about Morteau (to get 1 reputation score, but only if the player has negative reputation and already sided against Morteau instead of with him).
  • Xavier shrine, located west of Icewind's room. There is a book and a lich figurehead that can be picked up (reducing the player's reputation score by 1 for each item). The Icewind quest must be completed to access the items.
  • Rum room, located between Xavier shrine and the central room. There are two rums that can be taken, but doing this requires the player to learn a barrel spell from one of the bookshelves.
  • Study room, located south of the entrance room. The room has a couple of bookshelves to check. If the player has a positive reputation, they can talk to Winterbane for a quest of choosing which adept should be promoted to a sorcerer. Choosing any options other than Nippy and Articas earn the player 1 reputation score; choosing Chillton is connected to the Calron quest in "The Ivory Tower: Reading Room".
  • Frost's room, located between the study room and the central room. The room has a couple of bookshelves to check.
  • Nippy's room, located southwest of the central room and distinguished by its watery terrain. There is a hidden Bone Shooter in the corner of the room. After destroying the Bone Shooter, the player can report Nippy to Coldfist to progress the Nippy quest.
  • The central room, where Shadow Fang is. To be able to buy a mana orb from him, the player must have a positive reputation score and then peacefully asks how to cross the storm barrier.

Act 3

Largo, Hugo, and Marco start on the island map near the temple's entrance. The player simply needs to move to the entrance to finish the map. The subsequent temple map is just a cutscene that leads to the "Solant" scenario.

Revisiting the island again afterwards has no value, with the entrance to the temple being blocked.

Trivia

  • Kashmir would say "We go to the land of the ice and snow" here, a reference to the lyrics of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song".
