Wesnoth 1.5.4: Development Release
Wednesday, September 10 2008
A new Development release is ready. This is the fifth release in the 1.5.x tree. esr was busy fixing bug and since I am too lazy for listing them all in here, better have a look at the forum thread which describes the most important changes. As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache...
At the moment no binaries are ready. Once they are done you can find them at the download page. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite many bugs. If you find one, report it.
Wesnoth 1.4.5: Maintenance Release
Monday, September 8 2008
Wesnoth 1.4.5 has been released. This is a bugfix release for the stable 1.4.x branch. In this release several smaller bugs were fixed and many translations were updated. To celebrate the release and comment on it, have a look at this forum thread. There are still two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice (only translation updates this time) and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is not much more to read either...
At the moment the Debian, Gentoo, Mac OSX and OpenSolaris binaries are ready. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find any, report them.
Update: The Windows binary is now available on the download page.

Wesnoth 1.5.3: Development Release
Friday, August 22 2008
A new Development release is ready. This is the fourth release in the 1.5.x tree. A lot was changed since the start of the stable 1.4.x branch and since I am too lazy to list all the great changes in here, better have a look at the forum thread which describes the most important changes. As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache...

Update: The MacOSX binary is now available on the download page.
Update 2: The Windows binary is now available on the download page.
Add-on server migration
Wednesday, August 13 2008
The add-on server is now migrated to our main machine. Beside this I changed the default reference ingame to point to add-ons.wesnoth.org instead of campaigns.wesnoth.org to make clear that stuff on this server does not only include campaigns but basically every kind of add-on that is possible. I also updated the DNS entry for campaigns.wesnoth.org to make it point to the new machine, but it will take time until this takes effect. But you can already use add-ons.wesnoth.org to get add-ons. It does not matter if you use campaigns.wesnoth.org or add-ons.wesnoth.org, it should soon take you to exactly the same machine. On this server add-ons for the stable 1.2 and 1.4 series are available, as well as add-ons for the development series.
Everything back to normal
Saturday, August 9 2008
Finally everything should be back to normal again. That is the forums are up and working, too. In the crash the last two months of forum post were lost. That is even the attachments are likely to be broken and everyone will have to reupload their forum avatars. If you encounter any problems, please report them in this forum thread.
Once we are sure that the new server can handle the load, we will also move the add-on server here. This will result in the add-on server being down for a day. We will probably migrate it some time next week.
New server and repair status
Friday, August 8 2008
Welcome to our brand new server. We just moved the multiplayer server and the website over to our new machine that you are currently using. Everything beside the forum should be working now. That is even the "normal" images that seem to have been lost (cf. news posts of the last days) in the crash could be restored.
So much about the good news. The bad news is that the forums were hit really hard. That is over 500 user accounts, around 2000 posts, all attachment file data, roughly 1000 privs and all user rights were lost. Because of this we decided to switch to an older backup of the database used for the forum. This means that about two months of forum posts will be lost. The attachments might still be reachable with old adresses, though we are not too confident that those files will really work as expected. We will not be able to recover the posts of the last two months in a reliable way. We hope to have to forums working again rather soon, maybe will be online by tomorrow.
Server almost back again
Wednesday, August 6 2008
At the moment everything beside the forum should be up again and working as expected. That is all subdomains like gettext.wesnoth.org, units.wesnoth.org and the whole lot should be back up and working again. The wiki is working again, too. We hope that no data in the wiki was lost. If you find any pages having problems, please try to fix them. There is a list of files we do know that are broken/missing. If you have a local copy of any of those files or encounter missing images not listed there, please contact us.
Regarding the forums cycholka is still busy with making it work again. No idea if we will lose any data regarding user accounts and forum posts since he is currently fighting the user table. We don't know how many attachments are broken but found a backup for files from before march 2008. So at least some files are secure...
We will post updates every now and then to keep you informed.
Server crash
Monday, August 4 2008
As you might have noticed we are currently enduring some problems with our main server. That is: about one week ago we had a major harddrive failure resulting in the system not working at all. So far we don't know exactly how much of the data on the system is completely lost since we are working on restoring things. So far the multiplayer servers (stable and development) are back up again and the subdomain redirects like gettext.wesnoth.org are working again. What is not working so far are the forums and the wiki. The problem is that parts of the database seem to be broken. Currently cycholka is trying to fix and restore whatever is possible. Some stuff is completely lost like the screenshots folder we were using including the ancient screenshots. If anyone of you has a backup of those, feel free to contact us. We don't know how many of the forum attachments are broken but it is likely that some will not be restoreable.
We hope to have the wiki and forums usable again in some days but we don't know how long it will take. We will soon migrate the main server to a different machine anyway. This one will offer more network bandwidth and due to this make the website feel smooth again. We are not 100% sure if we will restore the wiki and forum completely before the move, so it might be that you are on the new server when the forum and wiki are up again...
I will try to post updates every now and then and please keep in mind that asking "when will the forum be up again" in our IRC chans won't speed things up at all. So please stay patient and play Wesnoth instead of using the forums. ;) If you are interested in some more info, have a look at the (unofficial) <a href="http://wesnoth.dbzer0.com/blog/"> Wesnoth Journals</a>.
Update: Okay, with the data provided by the Internet Archive it was possible to restore many images. The bad news is that basically all post 1.2 images seem to be lost. Have a look at this list of missing images to get an idea about what is missing. If you have the respective images, please contact us.

Server migration (almost) completed
Sunday, May 25 2008
The announced server migration is almost completed now. Due to the too high bandwidth usage of the add-on server we have to move it back to the old machine. It will take several more hours until the add-on server is up again. Beside this everything should be up and running. If you encounter problems with the new server, please post about them in this forum thread.
Update: The add-on server was started again at the old location. Just wait some time for the update of the DNS entry campaigns.wesnoth.org to be effective and you should be able to upload and download campaigns again.
Server migration
Friday, May 23 2008
Thanks to chains and all that donated, we just got a new server for an acceptable price where we are going to host basically every service Wesnoth does offer. That is we want to migrate the multiplayer server, content server, forum, wiki and all the other stuff to this machine. The content server and the multiplayer servers are already running there. This weekend we will work on migrating all the other stuff over. Due to this we will have to deactivate the wiki and forums and shut down the content server for some hours since we need the bandwidth to transfer all the data. The multiplayer server will still be up and running, but everything else will not be completely reachable starting on Saturday, May 24th around 12:00 GMT. Things will be up again once we are done, if we are lucky we might be done within 12 hours though it is unlikely. We hope to have all things working again on the new machine Sunday evening.
Stay tuned for the nice things we will be able to do once everything is on the same machine. Things like registered nicks for the multiplayer server with the same login ingame as used for the forum as well as a webinterface to the content server which might even allow rating of campaigns will get possible (once someone writes the code to do so).

Help keeping the Servers running
Wednesday, April 2 2008
Lately we had some problems with the database for the forum and we found no really perfect way for hosting so far. While talking about what we could do about the server(s) we came to the conclusion that it is about time to try to go for a server for our own. That is we want to rent a dedicated server somewhere to host all our services like the website, forum, wiki, add-on server and multiplayer server in one location. For this we need to gather some money and to do so, we would welcome gifts from you. You can find more information about this and how to help wesnoth in this forum post. Thanks for helping us keeping the site and all servers running well.
Great victory for Wesnoth
Tuesday, April 1 2008
In a major victory for open-source gaming, the Battle For Wesnoth project has been chosen to replace Microsoft's tired "Age of Empires" franchise. Months of secret negotiations among release manager Nils Kneuper (aka Ivanovic), senior developer Eric S. Raymond, and executives at Ensemble Studios and Microsoft led to the deal. "Raymond was particularly helpful in developing the terms," commented Darl McBride, the former head of Santa Cruz Operation recently brought in to manage Microsoft Games.
"We're very excited," Raymond confirmed. "We particularly wanted to see Wesnoth multiplayer go up on Xbox Live. What better way to increase awareness of Battle For Wesnoth?" Access to the existing Wesnoth servers will still be available until June 1 2008; players will be charged a small monthly fee.
Raymond and Kneuper declined to disclose the full terms of the deal, but Raymond admitted that they do involve a substantial amount of money. "We have a plan to use it wisely," he said, "beginning with hiring some real artists."
According to Kneuper, another clause of the agreement commits the Wesnoth project to migrate all its documentation to OOXML, which is expected to be approved by ISO tomorrow. Kneuper observed: "We are very pleased to be at the front of this important development in international standardization".
Discuss and celebrate this great victory with us in this forum post.
Update: For all those who have not realized it so far: This was just a joke. Happy April Fools Day!

Wesnoth participating at GSoC 2008
Monday, March 17 2008
Wesnoth was just accepted as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code. This means that students can propose projects they want to work on and will get paid for working on these if they are accepted. If you are a student and interested in working on Wesnoth as part of SoC, have a look at our SoC Ideas page in the wiki to see what we see as possible projects as well as who to contact. Beside this you should visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev at irc.freenode.net and talk with us about your ideas.
Wesnoth 1.4
Saturday, March 8 2008
More than one year has gone by since we released Wesnoth 1.2. To thank you for more than 2,100,000 downloads via sourceforge.net, we now proudly present Wesnoth 1.4. You can look at the (translated) release notes to get an idea about what has changed since 1.2. For those who just want to play, the new release is available for download. This stable release is compatible with the release candidates for 1.4. If you have any comments, we would be happy to hear them in the forum thread dedicated to this release. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find any, report them.
We are also looking for help in several areas, so that many other releases of similar caliber can follow this one. We are especially looking for translators, graphic artists (sprite, portraits, terrain, story images), music composers (a background in classical composition, and good equipment required), sound artists (for special effects), authors (writing/maintaining campaigns, creating content like unit descriptions, improving the ingame help) and, of course, coders. If you want to participate in developing Wesnoth, just have a look at the forum or visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev at irc.freenode.net.
More Server Maintenance
Friday, March 7 2008
The migration of our webserver to ibiblio.org is now almost complete. The forums are up again, upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3 and should basically be working. A little finetuning might still be needed, but it should at least be usable. Thanks cycholka for taking care of moving the database and upgrading the forum. Ettin is currently working on making the wiki work nicely and updating it to a more recent version of Mediawiki. I will keep you updated on when the wiki will be completely working again.
Thanks to ibiblio.org for providing us with huge amounts of space, bandwidth and support. Thanks cyrilb (and Jexiste) for helping us to migrate things and still supporting us by providing the DNS server and the domain name. And of course thanks to cycholka and ettin for the huge amounts of time you invested to move things.
Update: The move should now be completed, the Wiki and Forum updated to the latest versions and working. In the next days we will have to fix the map tags phpBB extension and improve colors for the forum theme. Beside this everything should be working nicely. If anything does not, please post about it in the forums and we will have a look at it.
Server Maintenance
Tuesday, March 4 2008
Currently we are about to switch our servers to a new location. this will lead to the website not being available for some time. The forum is already deavtivated, so that no posts get lost while migrating. We hope to manage completing the migration withhin the next two days. Thanks for your patience.
Update: Since you can read this post, you are already in the new site. That is the good news. The bad news is that the migration takes longer than we thought it would. Part of this is due to general problems to update the DNS entrys, another one is updating the software for the wiki and forum used and the most important problem are security concerns. We hope to have all issues fixed soon so that we can reopen the forums and the wiki. Thanks for your patience.
