Talk:RandomCampaignGenerator

From The Battle for Wesnoth Wiki

Hello kthakore...

I'm using the discussion page here because I'm not around on IRc while you're there

I don't think (like most devs) that a random story generator is a goodidea. However, I do believe that there is a very good SoC idea lying under, and I'll try to help you find it so we can get an interesting project.

You see, writing a storyline, dialogs and characters is fun... I think it's the most fun part of writing a campaign, and as such most UMC (user made content) authors would not use your system. Moreover the huge quantity of human made content would not make your job easier. Making automated campaigns won't fly.

However there is an other places where a similar idea could be really usefull : random map generation. Right now, Wesnoth has a random map generator which does a good job at building realistic maps, but the scripting capacities of the generator are very limited and game balance is not taken into account... Thus, the capacity to use random maps in campaigns is never really used, except for random mazes

I think a much more usefull and interesting project would be to do a random map generator that would be heavily parameterized through WML.

Being able to specify "I want a corridor type scenario with three ennemies with 3hex castles, the north one being undead, and lots of forest to favor elves" and be able to rely on the random map generator to alway do something interesting would be great

I hope this helps... My early guess is that you are fighting an upstream battle to get a story generator accepted, but a better RMG (which would be a subset of your current idea) is a more than sufficiant scope if you want to do it well, and would still be very interesting to do...
