Wesnoth 1.5.0: Development Release

Sunday, April 27 2008

A new Development release is ready. This is the first release in the brand new 1.5.x tree. A lot was changed since the start of the stable 1.4.x branch and since I am too lazy to list all the great changes in here, better have a look at the forum thread which describes the most important changes. As with the last releases, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read complete changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache...

At the moment no binaries are ready. Once they are done you can find them at the download page. Please keep in mind that it is a development release which might include quite many bugs. If you find one, report it.

Wesnoth 1.4.1: Maintenance Release

Monday, April 7 2008

Wesnoth 1.4.1 has been released. This is a bugfix release for the stable 1.4 branch. It mainly fixes smaller problems and features a rewritten multiplayer server to improve the servers speed while using less resources. Beside this the multiplayer lobby was sped up, spelling mistakes were fixed and many translations were updated. To celebrate the release and comment on it, post in this forum thread. As with the last development series, we continue to offer two versions of changelogs: a rather nice to read players changelog that only includes changes every player will probably notice and the (rather) complete changelog with (almost) all the details, which is likely to cause a serious headache...

At the moment only the Gentoo, OpenSolaris and OpenSuse binaries are ready. Once the others are done you can find them at the download page. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find any, report them.

Update: The MacOSX binaries are now available on the download page.

Update 2: The Windows binaries are now available on the download page.

Help keeping the Servers running

Wednesday, April 2 2008

Lately we had some problems with the database for the forum and we found no really perfect way for hosting so far. While talking about what we could do about the server(s) we came to the conclusion that it is about time to try to go for a server for our own. That is we want to rent a dedicated server somewhere to host all our services like the website, forum, wiki, add-on server and multiplayer server in one location. For this we need to gather some money and to do so, we would welcome gifts from you. You can find more information about this and how to help wesnoth in this forum post. Thanks for helping us keeping the site and all servers running well.

Great victory for Wesnoth

Tuesday, April 1 2008

In a major victory for open-source gaming, the Battle For Wesnoth project has been chosen to replace Microsoft's tired "Age of Empires" franchise. Months of secret negotiations among release manager Nils Kneuper (aka Ivanovic), senior developer Eric S. Raymond, and executives at Ensemble Studios and Microsoft led to the deal. "Raymond was particularly helpful in developing the terms," commented Darl McBride, the former head of Santa Cruz Operation recently brought in to manage Microsoft Games.

"We're very excited," Raymond confirmed. "We particularly wanted to see Wesnoth multiplayer go up on Xbox Live. What better way to increase awareness of Battle For Wesnoth?" Access to the existing Wesnoth servers will still be available until June 1 2008; players will be charged a small monthly fee.

Raymond and Kneuper declined to disclose the full terms of the deal, but Raymond admitted that they do involve a substantial amount of money. "We have a plan to use it wisely," he said, "beginning with hiring some real artists."

According to Kneuper, another clause of the agreement commits the Wesnoth project to migrate all its documentation to OOXML, which is expected to be approved by ISO tomorrow. Kneuper observed: "We are very pleased to be at the front of this important development in international standardization".

Discuss and celebrate this great victory with us in this forum post.

Update: For all those who have not realized it so far: This was just a joke. Happy April Fools Day!

Wesnoth participating at GSoC 2008

Monday, March 17 2008

Wesnoth was just accepted as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code. This means that students can propose projects they want to work on and will get paid for working on these if they are accepted. If you are a student and interested in working on Wesnoth as part of SoC, have a look at our SoC Ideas page in the wiki to see what we see as possible projects as well as who to contact. Beside this you should visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev at irc.freenode.net and talk with us about your ideas.

Wesnoth 1.4

Saturday, March 8 2008

More than one year has gone by since we released Wesnoth 1.2. To thank you for more than 2,100,000 downloads via sourceforge.net, we now proudly present Wesnoth 1.4. You can look at the (translated) release notes to get an idea about what has changed since 1.2. For those who just want to play, the new release is available for download. This stable release is compatible with the release candidates for 1.4. If you have any comments, we would be happy to hear them in the forum thread dedicated to this release. We hope there are no bugs left, but if you find any, report them.

We are also looking for help in several areas, so that many other releases of similar caliber can follow this one. We are especially looking for translators, graphic artists (sprite, portraits, terrain, story images), music composers (a background in classical composition, and good equipment required), sound artists (for special effects), authors (writing/maintaining campaigns, creating content like unit descriptions, improving the ingame help) and, of course, coders. If you want to participate in developing Wesnoth, just have a look at the forum or visit us in the IRC channel #wesnoth-dev at irc.freenode.net.

More Server Maintenance

Friday, March 7 2008

The migration of our webserver to ibiblio.org is now almost complete. The forums are up again, upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3 and should basically be working. A little finetuning might still be needed, but it should at least be usable. Thanks cycholka for taking care of moving the database and upgrading the forum. Ettin is currently working on making the wiki work nicely and updating it to a more recent version of Mediawiki. I will keep you updated on when the wiki will be completely working again.

Thanks to ibiblio.org for providing us with huge amounts of space, bandwidth and support. Thanks cyrilb (and Jexiste) for helping us to migrate things and still supporting us by providing the DNS server and the domain name. And of course thanks to cycholka and ettin for the huge amounts of time you invested to move things.

Update: The move should now be completed, the Wiki and Forum updated to the latest versions and working. In the next days we will have to fix the map tags phpBB extension and improve colors for the forum theme. Beside this everything should be working nicely. If anything does not, please post about it in the forums and we will have a look at it.

Server Maintenance

Tuesday, March 4 2008

Currently we are about to switch our servers to a new location. this will lead to the website not being available for some time. The forum is already deavtivated, so that no posts get lost while migrating. We hope to manage completing the migration withhin the next two days. Thanks for your patience.

Update: Since you can read this post, you are already in the new site. That is the good news. The bad news is that the migration takes longer than we thought it would. Part of this is due to general problems to update the DNS entrys, another one is updating the software for the wiki and forum used and the most important problem are security concerns. We hope to have all issues fixed soon so that we can reopen the forums and the wiki. Thanks for your patience.
