A Harrowing Escape is the third scenario in The Rise of Wesnoth campaign.

Background

The Lich-Lords, formerly the leaders of the Wesfolk, had opened gateways to allow armies of orcs to invade the Green Isle.[1] Due to the number of orcs, Stormvale was unable to hold out, being forced to evacuate its populace. Its king, Eldaric IV, died in battle to buy the evacuees time as they journeyed through the south pass, led by Prince Haldric.[2]

Scenario

trow_story_03-A_Harrowing_Escape.jpg
The refugees of Stormvale face the orcs in the South Pass.
Victory:
  • Defeat all enemy leaders
Defeat:
  • Death of Prince Haldric
  • Turns run out
Gold carryover:
  • Early finish bonus.
  • 40% of gold carried over to the next scenario.

While traveling through the south pass, a group of orcs flanked the Stormvale refugees from the east. As Haldric pressed forward, he discovered Burin, a dwarvish steelclad, inside a nearby mountain hut. Burin decided to join them on the road ahead, excited by the prospect of fighting orcs. After getting past the orcish guards, Snagakhan and Knafakhan,[b] the refugees' fighters met the orcs in battle, despite a handful of reinforcements arriving as the first of the two orcish warlords fell. Haldric slew both Tan-Schmog and Tan-NauVong before arriving at a crossroads.[3]

signpost.png Plot branch : Haldric chose to travel southeast
Believing that the orcs would be unlikely to pursue them through the Swamp of Esten, Haldric decided to travel southeast on the river road.[3]
signpost.png Plot branch : Haldric chose to travel southwest
Despite some uncertainty regarding the state of the Midlands, Haldric chose to travel southwest.[3]

Notes

  1. ^ a b The Wesfolk and Lady Outlaw only joined Haldric if he chose to spare the latter's life.
  2. ^ On hard difficulty, Hoshnak and Gruumogth also guarded the southern pass.
