The western coast of the Great Continent ran from the Frosty Waves in the north to the Southwood in the south.<ref name="peace">End of Peace, Son of the Black Eye</ref><ref name="banner">Born to the Banner, The South Guard</ref> Between these, from north to south, ran the Black Marshes, Tirigaz, Bitok, Jotha,<ref name="peace"/> Elensefar, the [[Bay of Pearls]], Aldril, Blackwater Port,<ref name="raid">The Raid, Liberty</ref> Aethenwood, and the Vale of Blossoming Trees.<ref name="banner"/>

Prior to the arrival of the humans on the Great Continent, the western coast was primarily dominated by the elves,<ref name="new">A New Land, The Rise of Wesnoth</ref> although they were unable to control certain parts of the coast, such as one beach inhabited by mudcrawler-conjuring saurian traders,<ref name="lizard">Lizard Beach, The Rise of Wesnoth</ref> or the Bay of Pearls' timber being plundered by dwarves.<ref name="new"/> When the humans arrived at the Great Continent, they negotiated with the elves and earned the plains to the north and south of the Great River, entitling them to the western coast.<ref name="kalian">The Ka'lian, The Rise of Wesnoth</ref>

After the humans settled in the Great Continent, they established the coastal settlements of Elensefar,<ref name="lava">Lava and Stone, Secrets of the Ancients</ref> Aldril,<ref name="hunters">The Hunters, Liberty</ref> and Blackwater Port.<ref name="bandits">Bandits, Secrets of the Ancients</ref> Humans also came to dominate the Isle of Alduin, not far from the coast,<ref name="slipping">Slipping Away, Secrets of the Ancients</ref> meaning that ships would travel between the island and the coast.<ref name="bandits"/>
