When a merfolk unit reads the book, he/she spends 2 movement points in forest hexes instead of 1. This is because a forest hex is usually not just the forest terrain but a combination of forest and flat terrains. Therefore, despite having to spend only 1 movement point in the forest terrain itself, he/she has to spend 2 movement points due to the flat terrain aspect of the hex. For reference, the Terran Description for a forest hex usually says "Movement properties: '''Worst of''' Flat, Forest" and "Defense properties: '''Best of''' Flat, Forest."

* * Note that all forest hexes have mixed terrain types (forest + flat, forest + hills, etc.), and the Wose Lore's bonuses apply only to the forest property of the hexes. Therefore, there are cases where some units still spend 2 or more movement points on forest hexes. For example, merfolk units spend 2 movement points on forest + flat hexes due to the flat property and 4 movement points on forest + hills hexes due to the hills property. As for defense, no such consideration is necessary because 70% is the best defense number in HttT anyway.

All units except for Elvish Avenger and Elvish Ranger

Wose Lore is a book left behind by Haralamdum, the Ancient Wose, in scenario 20b Underground Channels in Heir to the Throne.

Elvish Avenger and Elvish Ranger learn nothing meaningful from this book. Therefore, all units except for these 2 unit types can pick up and read this book.

As of version 1.18.0, it grants the following 4 bonuses to the unit that reads it:

New ability Ambush
Defense in forest* 70%
Movement cost in forest* 1
XP to advance** -20%
  • * Note that all forest hexes have mixed terrain types (forest + flat, forest + hills, etc.), and the Wose Lore's bonuses apply only to the forest property of the hexes.
  • ** This bonus is introduced from version 1.18. It virtually gives the unit the intelligent trait. When an already intelligent unit reads the book, it only requires 80%×80%=64% XP of the base unit type to advance.
