This article is about the scenario. For the forest, see Oldwood Forest.

The Oldwood is the fifth scenario in The Rise of Wesnoth campaign.

Background

The Kingdom of Stormvale had been overrun by orcs from the Old Continent, brought to the Green Isle through gateways opened by the Wesfolk's Lich-Lords. Though its king, Eldaric IV, had perished, its populace had been evacuated by Prince Haldric.[1] Haldric was warned of orcish armies blocking his flight from Stormvale, so he turned his band of refugees towards the Oldwood Forest.[2][3]

Unknown to Haldric, however, Oldwood Forest was inhabited by a large number of woses, led by Elilmaldur-Rithrandil. The woses had poor relations with the humans, who had engaged in timber cutting within the Oldwood Forest.[4]

Scenario

Victory:
  • Defeat all enemy leaders
Defeat:
  • Death of Prince Haldric
  • Death of Elilmaldur-Rithrandil
  • Turns run out

  • 40% of gold carried over to the next scenario.

As the refugees entered the Oldwood Forest, they encountered Elilmaldur-Rithrandil, much to Haldric's surprise. He was accused of being a "tree-foe", but insisted on peace between the two groups. Elilmaldur-Rithrandil requested that, as proof of Haldric's goodwill, that he help defend the forest against a group of orcs, led by Tan-Gralg and Tan-Rugar. True to their word, the Stormvale refugees helped the woses defeat the orcs.[4]

Haldric spoke of the growing orcish threat, but Elilmaldur-Rithrandil rejected the idea of the woses joining the Stormvale refugees, claiming that the woses would fare better if they remained in the Oldwood Forest. Despite this, Elilmaldur-Rithrandil offered to open nearby temple catacombs, in which the Ruby of Fire was protected by one of the Lich-Lords. Desperate for whatever help he could get, Haldric accepted the offer.[4]

Before entering the temple, Haldric was confronted by the Lady Outlaw, who felt uneasy with fighting Lenvan, as he had previously been an important Wesfolk leader. She explained that the Wesfolk had sought necromancy as a way for the best Wesfolk to live forever. Haldric allowed her to scout the road ahead instead.[4]
