The Dragon is a scenario in The Rise of Wesnoth campaign. Depending on in-game decisions, it can be the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, or seventeenth scenario in the campaign, alongside Lizard Beach, Troll Hole, and Cursed Isle.

Background

After orcs invaded the Green Isle,[1] its human populace was forced to flee east to the Great Continent, led by Prince Haldric.[2] Upon arriving at the Great Continent, the refugees were met by Lady Dionli, who brought them before the Ka'lian.[3] The council eventually agreed to allow the humans to settle in the plains surrounding the Great River and the hills to the south of the Great River, on the condition that Haldric complete four quests.[4]

Lord Logalmier decreed that Haldric be made to fight Shek'kahan, the dragon of the Green Swamp, who surrounded himself with various saurian minions.[4] He traveled for some days before eventually reaching the swamp.[5]

Scenario

Victory:
  • Slay the Dragon

Bonus objective:

  • Slay the Dragon and defeat all enemy leaders (early finish bonus)
Defeat:
  • Death of Prince Haldric
  • Death of Lady Jessene
  • Turns run out
Gold carryover:
  • 40% of gold carried over to the next scenario.

Upon entering the swamp, Haldric's forces identified a mountain in its center as Shek'kahan's home. Haldric toyed with the idea of calling himself "Prince Haldric the Dragonbane". The saurians of the swamp, led by Irix, Vriss, Axiz, and Satras, swiftly attacked Haldric, also weaponizing mudcrawlers and bats. Eventually, the fighting disturbed Shek'kahan sufficiently for him to emerge from the mountain, threatening Haldric. Haldric's forces fell upon the dragon, and despite the efforts of the saurians, Shek'kahan was slain.[5]

Notes

  1. ^ Typhon's merfolk were recruitable only on easy difficulty. On other difficulties, only merfolk veterans could be recalled.[3]
  2. ^ a b c These units did not appear on easy difficulty.
