Recognitiones (revisions)

  • Vampire Bat
    • 'Vespertilio Hirudo' (blood-sucking bat)
  • Galleon
    • 'Navis Longa' (this and transport galleon were the wrong way round)
  • Pirate Galleon
    • 'Navis Piratica'
  • Transport Galleon
    • 'Navis Oneraria'
  • Armageddon Drake
    • 'Draculus Ignipotens' (Drake ruling in fire (an epithet for Vulcan))
  • Drake Flameheart
    • 'Draculus Flammifer' (Drake bearing flames, plus, it's contiguous with 'Flamma')
  • Drake Glider
    • 'Draculus Labens' (gliding drake, because velivolum is a purely nautical word)
  • Hurricane Drake
    • 'Draculus Altivolans' (Drake soaring on high)
  • Dwarvish Dragonguard
    • 'Draconigena Nanorum' (dragonborn dwarf, occasional epithet for Alexander the Great, and it's more laconic)
  • dragonstaff
    • 'Scipio Draconis' (pretty much literal, but more ceremonial than current)
  • thunderstick
    • 'Virga Tonitrus' (grammatical correction)
  • Dwarvish Thunderguard
    • 'Nanus Altitonans' (Dwarf thundering on high)
  • Dwarvish Pathfinder
    • 'Indagator Nanorum'
  • Elvish Captain
    • 'Princeps Dryadalum' (capitaneus is neo-latin and therefore bad :P)
  • staff
    • 'lituus' (a lituus is an augural staff, unlike virga, which can be a wand but is more likely to mean walking-stick)
  • Elvish Hero
    • 'Heros Dryadalum' (typo)
  • Elvish Marshal
    • 'Imperator Dryadalum' (closer to the English)
  • Elvish Sharpshooter m+f
    • 'Flos Arci Dryadalum' (lit, Flower of bow of the elves, flower meaning the best and choicest soldier, and it's elves, so references to flowers are good)
  • Elvish Marksman m+f
    • 'Dryadalis Florens Arco' (Elf flourishing in the bow)
  • Elvish Ourider
    • 'Praecursor Dryadalum' (it was in my dictionary :P)
  • Goblin Knight
    • 'Robur Lupitum' (elite of the wolf-riders (robur is a synonym of flos in this sense), works better with the unit description)
  • Gryphon Rider
    • 'Grypes' (might as well)
  • lance
    • 'lancea'
  • Grand Knight
    • 'Eques Optimus' (grammar fix)
  • Duelist
    • 'Lanista' (Duelator wasn't a word, and in any case, the root was an old form of bellum)
  • sabre
    • 'acinaces'
  • mace
    • 'Fustis Ferreus' (iron club, because we had named our mace after a certain spice and there is no word for mace)
  • missile
    • 'telum' (the 'magicum' is redundant)
  • morning star
    • 'scipio armatus'

'aspergillum' might work, or it might not

  • club
    • 'clava' (for stylistic reasons)
  • Highwayman
    • 'Latrocinans' (might as well use a substantive)
  • Woodsman
    • 'Lignator' (woodcutter, and stuff like that)
  • Huntsman
    • 'Venator' (as in one who hunts, as opposed to one who catches animals (captor), plus it was a immunes in the Roman army which fits the unit description)
  • Trapper
    • 'Captor' (as above)
  • Mermaid Diviner
    • 'Hariola Nereiis' (typo)
  • water spray
    • 'aspergo aquae' (the previous didn't make much sense, and aspergo has religious connotations =D)

However on further thought 'spuma aquae' is probably better

  • Giant Spider
    • 'Ingens Aranea' (word order)
  • bite
    • 'mordere' (why wasn't this corrected last time? ;) )
  • Giant Scorpion
    • 'Ingens Nepa' (per spider)
  • Water Serpent
    • 'Hydrus' (thus connecting it with Nagas per the unit description)
  • Ogre
    • 'Homo Immanis' (vir was too respectful for an ogre)
  • cleaver
    • 'dolabra'
  • throwing knives
    • 'cultri iaciendis' (grammatical fix)
  • Orcish Grunt
    • 'Orx Gregarius' (Common/ orc of the flock, a military tern for the lowest ranking soldiers of all who get all the lovely menial duties and lowest pay)
  • greatsword
    • 'spatha maior' (sounds more Latin to me)
  • short sword
    • 'gladius minor' (in accordance with the greatsword)

an alternative is pugio

  • shadow wave
    • 'unda umbrarum' (more literal, and sounds more awesomey)
  • Dark Adept m+f
    • 'Adsecula Veneficii' (grammar fix)
  • plague staff
    • 'lituus pestis' (in accordance with the staff)
  • Skeleton
    • 'Ossa'
  • Draug
    • 'Vindex Animatus'
  • Nightgaunt
    • 'Larva' (yeah, here we go again, it means ghost/mask which is a coincidence I cannot resist, and besides, we're already using Lemur as Wraith, it also frees up noctivagus which I think should be used for nightstalk)

Unit Descriptions

  • Blood Bats are so named because of their ruddy hue, which some mark as a symbol of their preferred diet. These creatures are fast and can drain the blood of those they attack, thereby gaining some of the health lost by their victims.
    • 'Vespertiliones Sanguinis ita nominant ob formas rubras, quae nonnulli ut signum cibi deliciae designant. Bestiae celerem sunt et sanguinem eis oppugnatus expotare potuant, quibus partem salutis adipiscantur, quae hostia amiserunt.'
  • The most vicious, predatory, and successful of the Blood Bats become Dread Bats, gaining the ability to drain not merely the blood but the very life energy of their victims.
    • 'Saevissimus, pradatorissimus et prosperissimus Sanguinum Vespertilionum Formidines Vespertiliones existent, percepentes potestatem bibentium non solum sanguinem sed etiam veram animam hostiarum.'
  • Propelled by oars or small sails, boats are used to travel short distances and in shallows where large ships cannot navigate.
    • 'Rates, remis aut veis guberntes, usui hominibus sunt causa haud procul et in brevi ire, ubi naves magnae navigare non potuant.'
  • Galleons are blue-water ships built for trade and transport.
    • 'Navis Mercaturae naves pelagi sunt, quae pro mercatura et advectus aedificiatur.'
